Design, craftsmanship, and material have always been important topics at Mathildenhöhe. The invitation to the Osthang extended to one of the world’s most renowned furniture producers continues this tradition.
In its ‘mobile wood-bending unit’, Thonet will showcase its bentwood production techniques and help with construction of the chairs in the events hall. On two afternoons those attending can watch how wood is bent with steam and physical strength.

It is a success story with many facets.
Thonet has been producing high-quality home and contract furniture since 1819. The combination of form, function, and aesthetics features in all its activities. The company founder Michael Thonet achieved his breakthrough in 1859 with the iconic Chair No. 14, the so-called Viennese coffee house chair. The innovative technology of bending solid beech wood meant that for the first time was possible to produce a chair on an industrial scale.
